Ancient Sparta
Sparta has long fascinated observers. Even in ancient times, its unique Constitution and society was studied, analysed, praised and criticized. Our knowledge of Ancient Sparta is largely based on the commentary and observations of visitors - who naturally viewed it through the distorting glass of their own experience and values. The only genuinely Spartan sources to which we have access today is the evidence of archaeology. Since to this day the site of Ancient Sparta has never been completely or systematically excavated, this evidence is incomplete at best. Nevertheless, the findings of archaeology and new historical approaches such as women's studies have led to considerable revision in the traditional image of Sparta. Helena Schrader has done extensive, secondary research on Ancient Sparta. She has summarised her conclusions in a separate website "Sparta Reconsidered." In addition, Helena Schrader has completed two novels set in Ancient Sparta, Are they Singing in Sparta? and The Olympic Victor. Are they Singing in Sparta? The Olympic Victor
She plans at least two further novels. The Dispensible King For the Love of a Slave
