Crackers and Crumbs

Distanced thoughts so falsely grown
protection from my fears
Gauze or cotton swabs to 
to daub away the tears

Words and ways of children
so often left alone
Words and ways we harbor
thinking we have grown

We met in moving madness
chequered wasted years
We drifted part in sadness
an illness we both shared

Now the days are brighter
the nights not near as long
Our steps though few and halting
Somehow seem more true

I would not lose our yesterdays
I'm sure they will find a place
That does not bar the moment
nor shade what yet may be

Words and ways of children
from whom love has not yet flown
Words and ways we cling to
long after we have grown
