Whoa!!! This site was amazing, fantastic, mind blowing!Very informational. I was suprised how sophisticated Spartan society was, considering my history teachers have made it sound like Athens was the "Enlightened" city while Sparta was just a city full of jocks/players. Women had TONS more rights than the Athenian women did.Anyway, thanks for the info; it helped my research paper alot and answered a whole bunch of questions.

You are misrepresenting the facts, and only the ones you want, look further, homosexuality was common and the norm for Sparta.

Webmaster comments   No one today knows with any certainty how widespead homosexuality was in ancient Sparta. The evidence is too fragmentary, indirect, and corrupted. Furthermore, the acceptance of homosexuality probably varied over time - just as it has in the U.S., Western Europe or the Middle East. I have good eveidence that - at least in the archaic and early classical period - homosexuality was frowned upon if not sanctioned and certainly much less common than in other Greek cities. That's what contemporary sources with the first hand experience with Sparta attest. In short, I've done my research and listed my key sources. What are yours and how are they superior? Are they contemporary? Are they Spartan? Not possible. Contemporary Spartan sources do not exist. I suggest you look further and try to keep an open mind. Helena

An interesting, informative, and attractive site. I was particularly intrigued by the notion that Sparta was far more of an urban centre with worthwhile public buildings, temples and other architecture; than the usual comments we are familar with about it being merely a collection of villages. What would be interesting is if an accomplished historical artist could create a hypothetical rendering of the city at its peak - say after the Persian Wars.

Webmaster comments   Indeed, an artistäs rendering of Ancient Sparta would be very useful. The problem is in the absense of systematic archology we have only Pausanias to go on. He catelogues the temples, monuments and civic buildings without really describing them. Still any attempt to follow his meticulous guide book graphically would be a huge step forward. I've written a short essay on this topic for the Sparta Journal which will be released early next year. You might want to watch for that. Helena
